“Challenges to Design a New System of School Admission”

“Challenges to Design a New System of School Admission”

The new Law on School Inclusion holds as central concepts, transparency and equity in the process of school admission. This legislation generates a system of centralized admission that recognizes the right of the parents to choose a school for their children and, at the same time, specifies that over-demanded schools must solve the admission in a non-discriminatory manner. The details, however, are important and many international experiences show that certain designs can lead to unsatisfactory results.

In this talk, Professor Sönmez will give an overview of some conceptual issues arising in the practical design of admission systems. He will describe the advantages and disadvantages of the mechanisms used in practice.  His talk will also focus on how academic work illuminates the design of current admission systems.

Tayfun Sönmez is Professor in Economics at Boston College. He is one of the pioneers and a world renowned scholar working in the design of markets and school admission systems. He has actively participated in the design of the high-school admission systems in New York, Boston and Chicago, and has acted as consultant to numerous agencies around the world.
