The Central Bank of Chile, together with the MIPP Milenio Institute, launched a new version of the free online financial education course that will have the participation of 758 teachers from educational establishments and pedagogy students.

Delivering tools that allow content on financial education to be brought to classrooms in an original and entertaining way is the objective of the course “The City of Opportunities”, the free online training program taught by the Central Bank and the MIPP Millennium Institute of the University of Chile since 2018.

On Tuesday, August 1, 2023, the sixth version of this course certified by the Center for Pedagogical Improvement, Experimentation and Research (CPEIP) began, which will have 758 participants divided between teachers from educational establishments and pedagogy students, who will learn contents and pedagogical tools for the development of activities in classrooms.

For this new edition, 928 people applied, however, due to the requested requirements, 758 were accepted. Of the selected individuals, about 46% are from the Metropolitan Region, while the other 54% are divided between various provinces of Chile. Regarding the establishments of accepted teachers, the majority belong to subsidized private education establishments (47%), 31% to municipal education and 16% to private schools.

Based on the curriculum of the Ministry of Education, the course is organized around 6 modules that include content that addresses basic concepts of micro and macroeconomics, the financial system, personal finances, and roles and functions of the Central Bank of Chile.

Along with having a platform specially developed for this initiative, the program includes the holding of three virtual workshops that allow us to delve deeper into methodological aspects and economic and personal finance content. Likewise, consider as part of the final work the design of a thematic class, which can be included in the teaching evaluation portfolio.

During the development of the course, a group of tutors will accompany the teachers’ learning, answering questions, resolving doubts and detecting needs.

“The Central Bank has a permanent commitment to financial education. Since 2003 we have been developing initiatives along these lines, with emphasis on those aimed especially at children and young people in school, since behaviors and habits are better acquired when trained from an early age. It is important to remember that knowing how to make informed economic and financial decisions is a capacity that must be learned and trained,” said Rosanna Costa, President of the Central Bank of Chile.

“The main idea of the course is to bring economics and finance closer to teachers so that they have a multiplying effect with their students, and that they can make better decisions on a daily basis. In Chile we have low levels of financial literacy and we believe that with this initiative we can contribute to closing gaps, reaching a greater number of students,” explains Andrea Canales, researcher at the Milenio MIPP Institute, academic at the U. of O. ‘Higgins and in charge of managing the course contents.

We wish the best of luck to those selected for the City of Opportunities course, and we hope to see you at graduation!
