The MIPP Millennium Institute reformulates its research lines in order to expand its impact, and open up new opportunities and scientific collaborations.
In its efforts to maintain its commitment to building a better society through economics and public policy, the MIPP Millennium Institute implemented some recent changes to its research lines. The new research areas of MIPP are: Data and Public Policy (DPP), Finance, and Market Design and Regulation (MDR).
The objective of the Data and Public Policy (DPP) research line is to contribute to the debate by using empirical evidence as well as a data-based approach as tools for studying various economic and political problems.
“The role of data in public policy is twofold. First, economic and political decisions face several challenges and related data allow us to quantify these issues. Second, rigorous empirical evidence provides useful information in the development and design of better public policies, ”says Juan Escobar, Principal Researcher at the MIPP Millennium Institute.
Some of the topics that researchers will explore over the next five years are: Conflict, Health, Labor Markets, and Discrimination.
Likewise, the MIPP Millennium Institute will continue with Finance as one of their research lines. Work in this area aims to understand the operation of financial markets and their impact on the process of economic development in countries around the world.
“This line of research will be expanded to cover topics that are currently being debated in academic and policy circles,” Escobar notes. The topics that the MIPP Millennium Institute’s Finance researchers will explore over the next five years include: Financial Regulation, Energy and Finance, Finance of Pension Systems, Financial Innovation, and Finance and Crime.
For its part, the research line Market Design and Regulation (MDR) aims to evaluate and design market and non-market institutions, in order to maximize welfare and efficiency under the incentive, technological, logistical, and transparency constraints. The following is a list of some of the research topics that MDR researchers will explore over the next five years: Auction Design, School Admission and Segregation system, and Price and Quality Competition between public and private providers, among others.
