The Millennium Institute for Research in Market Imperfections and Public Policy, MIPP, housed in the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) of the University of Chile, hosted the semiannual meeting of the Millennium Initiative.
Details of the new organization, news regarding the Outreach Program, and the incorporation of the organization into the new Ministry of Science and Technology, were some of the topics discussed at the XXXVI Millennium Centers Meeting, a biannual event attended by all directors of the Millennium Institutes and Centers enrolled in the program.
The activity was led by Carolina Torrealba, new Executive Director of the program from the Ministry of Economy, Development, and Tourism of Chile, which promotes the development of research centers of excellence in the country. It should be noted that the host for the day was the MIPP Millennium Institute, a center that conducts research in economics and it´s housed in the Industrial Engineering Department of the FCFM.
Millennium Institute for Market Imperfections and Public Policy (MIPP)
During the meeting, the director of the MIPP Millennium Institute and academic at the Industrial Engineering department, Juan Escobar, presented the lines of research, scientific activities, and projects of the Institute, whose objective is to develop and disseminate knowledge in economics and related disciplines.
It should be noted that, during 2017, the Institute organized 40 weekly seminars, where national and foreign researchers and academics presented their most recent research. “This is an instance where debate is generated by the researchers of the Institute and students” said Professor Escobar during his presentation.
The academic highlighted the organization of six international workshops, as examples of interdisciplinary discussion on frontier research on economics and political science.
Outreach and applied science in public policies
One of the reasons why the MIPP Institute stands out in the Millennium program, is because of its dissemination and transfer of knowledge strategy, whose goal is the dissemination of relevant economic ideas.
Among its outreach projects are: the Miradas MIPP economics blog, the annual Gazette magazine, the economic and financial education project, “The city of opportunities“, created in conjunction with the Central Bank, and the development courses for students and professionals in the field.
Also highlighted was the technological transfer of the Institute’s research to Chile’s public policy debate, such as the creation and implementation of the School Admission System, the consultation work provided in the collusion case of CMPC and SSA, and the Mapuche Data Project, which is developing a database and quantitative studies on the Mapuche – State of Chile conflict.
