Political Economy
The goal of the PE research line is to explore the incentives that citizens, politicians, and organized groups face, and how these goals may not coincide with socially preferred outcomes. The design of economic policies and the functioning of several markets require theoretical understanding and empirical analysis of the underlying preferences, institutions, and incentives affecting politicians and other social actors' behavior. Protests, political violence, and other civic participation forms have challenged the existing political structure and its institutions. Understanding the political behavior of citizens is key to understanding these emerging social phenomena, which in turn becomes critical for the design and implementation of sound and sustainable public policies.
