On October 29 and 30, 2024, the Millennium Institute for Research in Market Imperfections and Public Policy (MIPP) organized the “Workshop in Policy Evaluation” at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile. Researchers, including MIPP academics Pamela Jervis and Benjamín Villena, shared their studies, perspectives, experiences, and knowledge on the impact of public policies, especially in the labor market.
Over two days, participants discussed a variety of topics, such as:
“The idea behind this variety is to emphasize the methodological similarities of different investigations to answer a wide diversity of questions, promoting cross-pollination of experiences,” stated Benjamín Villena, MIPP researcher and academic at Universidad Andrés Bello.
He added that, “as in the previous year, the Workshop in Policy Evaluation focuses mainly on the common use of a set of research techniques to study the impact of economic policies in various areas.”
For her part, MIPP researcher and academic at Industrial Engineering of the University of Chile, Pamela Jervis, expressed that:
The Workshop in Policy Evaluation is now in its second year, bringing together experts, researchers, and academics to debate and analyze specific topics related to public policies. This allows us to share our innovative ideas, present our recent evidence-based research, and discuss possible improvements or effective alternatives and approaches to complex public issues. Additionally, this instance allows us to foster networks and collaboration among attendees, which is crucial for the Department, and allows our students to explore techniques, tools, and methodologies relevant to policy formulation and evaluation.
It is worth noting that the evaluation of public policies is a fundamental process, as it measures the impact, efficiency, and effectiveness of government actions. It also facilitates accountability on the part of decision-makers and promotes transparency in public management.
In conclusion, Benjamín Villena expressed that:
This year we continue on the path of last year and other events organized by MIPP. We propose to hold small-scale events, with high participation and involvement of participants in academic interactions of a high scientific and human level. Without a doubt, activities like these benefit the MIPP academic community, the participants, and allow extending networks of collaboration and academic exchange with top-level researchers. We are very satisfied with what has been achieved in this event and hope to continue contributing in this line.
