Over 38 Girls Participated in the Bootcamp for Girls and Adolescents: Leaders in Engineering and Mathematics

13 September, 2024

The first edition of this free course has concluded. It was organized in partnership with the Summer School of the University of Chile, the Department of Industrial Engineering, and the ACT210005 Ring Project – Information and Computation in Market Design. Its aim is to cultivate future leaders in Engineering and Mathematics.

From August 9 to September 6, 2024, the Millennium Institute MIPP, together with the Summer School of the University of Chile, held a Bootcamp for girls and adolescents at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering of the University of Chile.

More than 35 girls participated in various activities, both online and in-person, designed to nurture future leaders in Engineering and Mathematics. Among the in-person activities, several workshops stood out: Integration and Leadership, Robotics (Electrical), Leadership, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, Programming, and more.

Additionally, three lectures were delivered:

  • “Mathematics and Algorithms for Electing Representatives” by Professor Víctor Verdugo of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
  • “The Mathematics of Privacy” by Professor Cristóbal Guzmán of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
  • “The Mathematics Behind Games” by Academic Mario Bravo of the Adolfo Ibáñez University.
  • “Choosing and Being Chosen: School Admission Systems as an Example of Markets Without Money” by Adriana Piazza, a researcher at the Millennium Institute MIPP and a professor at the University of Chile.

“The Bootcamp’s objective is to provide tools to school-aged girls interested in engineering and technology, allowing them to explore these disciplines and envision academic and professional pathways in the field,” said Juan Escobar, Director of the Millennium Institute MIPP.

“To achieve this, the Bootcamp program included activities enabling participants to gain specific knowledge in programming, mechanics, and electrical concepts through a robotics workshop, as well as online lectures introducing market design as a discipline and its applications in public policy and understanding various social issues. Additionally, participants took part in interpersonal skills workshops,” added Escobar.

On the final day of the Bootcamp, before the closing ceremony, a mentoring session was held with female students from the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Chile. These mentors shared their experiences overcoming gender stereotypes in STEM fields and how they see themselves as future leaders in their disciplines.

“The Bootcamp was positively evaluated by the participants, who, in addition to appreciating the academic aspects, valued the dynamic and participatory methodology, as well as the creation of a space for sharing experiences and building a community of women in the field,” stated Marcela Guajardo, Executive Director of the MIPP.
