Sofía Correa promotes the Network of Women Economists of Chile

3 June, 2024

With the discussion “Women in economics: challenges and opportunities”, held on May 15, REM-Chile (Network of Women Economists of Chile), was relaunched after being established in 2023 as a Group of the Economics Society of Chile (SECHI).

The researcher at the MIPP Milenio Institute and academic of Industrial Engineering at the University of Chile, Sofía Correa, who coordinates this initiative together with the founders of this association Sofía Bauducco (Central Bank), Francisca Pérez (UAI) and Andrea Repetto (PUC), tells its beginnings and objectives.

“The network was born from an initiative by WELAC (Women Economists in Latin America and the Caribbean), who promote the careers of women economists in the region. Its objective is to generate a space for organization and coordination between women economists, to promote the development of their careers at all stages (undergraduate students, postgraduate students, academics, etc.),” says Sofía, adding that REM-Chile currently brings together female academics. and graduate students from multiple universities, as well as professionals working in the public sector and industry.

The first activity of this network included presentations by Raquel Fernández, Silver Professor of Economics at New York University; Rossana Costa, president of the Central Bank, and Claudia Martínez, researcher at the PUC and the Inter-American Development Bank. This activity, in which the main challenges and opportunities that women in economics face in Chile were addressed, was moderated by our researcher, Sofía Correa.
