Daniel Schwartz won an international award for the course “Data Analysis and Causal Interference”

7 November, 2023

The researcher at the MIPP Millennium Institute and Uchile Industrial Engineering academic, Daniel Schwartz, was awarded the “Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance Awards”, a distinction awarded by the Global Mooc Alliance, an association of 17 universities and three online education centers. , whose goal is to become a leading platform to contribute to the quality of online education.

The University of Chile was the only participant from Latin America, a competition in which study centers such as Cornell University, Politecnico de Milano, University of Manchester, Nanyang Technological University and Peking University, among others, participated.

The course “Data Analysis and Causal Interference”, whose previous version was “Applications of Probability and Statistics in Management”, competed with 31 other applicants from 14 renowned universities around the world, and was chosen by a panel of experts.

This course, where the Industrial Civil Engineer Uchile Andrés Fernández also participated, used the B-Learning approach to provide students with a unique experience. With audiovisual capsules, online exercises and activities, this platform provides the necessary tools to learn to master data analysis and causal inference.

“This award is shared with Andrés Fernández, with whom we implemented activities and online material in this course. In this way, students complement face-to-face classes with audiovisual capsules, computational exercises and online activities to understand and apply data analysis and causal inference techniques,” says Daniel Schwartz.

Online education

The “Data Analysis and Causal Inference” course uses the B-Learning or Blended-Learning modality that combines face-to-face training given by teachers with online activities. Unlike fully online learning, the online portion of the training does not replace in-person classes, and the incorporation of technology allows the learning experience to be enhanced and the understanding of certain topics expanded.

All its content, meanwhile, was mounted on the Online Education platform (EOL) of the University of Chile, but with an instructional design methodologically thought out in online mode, so that students can access it whenever they deem it convenient.

“The use of online education methodologies, as a complement to face-to-face teaching, has been shown to improve the autonomy and self-regulation of undergraduate students. Online education and face-to-face education have advantages that can be enhanced using information and communication technologies.

That is why making the content available on an online education platform, with an instructional design that enhances learning and maintaining face-to-face classes with active methodologies that facilitate the interaction of students and teachers – developing skills such as critical thinking, communication skills, solving complex problems, creativity, leadership and others – are increasingly relevant in the labor market,” explains Cecilia Saint-Pierre, director of EOL.

The winners are grateful for the support of the Vice-Rector of Information Technologies of the University of Chile, a key actor in the application, headed by the MIPP researcher and Uchile Industrial Engineering academic, José Correa, in addition to the support of Máximo Bosch, Master’s director Professionals and Executive Education, and Daniel Esparza, MBA deputy director.
