The Institute for Research in Market Imperfections and Public Policies (MIPP) is an academic center that develops and disseminates knowledge in economics and related fields. Our goal is to develop cutting-edge approaches to address some of the most challenging and important issues in market design and regulation, finance, data, and public policy, and make them available to all of society.

Among the Institute’s objectives is the training of future generations of researchers in economics and public policies, for which it develops different activities and initiatives aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in the area.

In this context, the “Gender, Economy and Public Policy Research Fund” aims to promote the development of research skills and competencies in undergraduate and graduate students, and highlight the importance of gender issues in the study of disciplines. of economics and public policies.

Five selected

Five undergraduate and graduate students from study programs in economics and public policies were selected to develop research on topics of economics, public policies, and gender, during the second semester of 2023, under the supervision of one of the MIPP researchers.

Here we tell you who they are:

Sabeida Pérez: The student of the Master’s Degree in Management and Public Policies (MGPP) at the University of Chile, is going to carry out her research on “Women and labor markets: Determinants of female labor participation.” The professor in charge of her will be the MIPP Millennium Institute Benjamín Villena researcher.

Concerning her application and why she chose to investigate that problem, she said the following:

“Women’s paid work is a tool to overcome poverty, in addition to generating social returns and empowering women economically, giving them autonomy and improving their self-esteem, while increasing their bargaining power at home and impacting their social status. The above highlights the importance of developing public policies that correct market imperfections and encourage women’s participation.”

Karlas Paredes: The undergraduate student of Industrial Engineering at the University of Chile, decided to carry out her research on the “Study of Female Participation in Social Movements.” The teacher in charge will be the researcher from the MIPP Milenio Institute Sofía Correa.

About her application and why she chose to investigate that problem, she said the following:

“Gender issues have always been of interest to me, therefore, I find these instances very good where I can apply the knowledge obtained during my career in this field. Without a doubt the 8M march is a very important instance for the movement feminist, it is impressive to see the number of attendees each year, so it is interesting for me to understand the reasons, judgments, and opinions behind this march.

Ivette Coronado: The student of the Master’s Degree in Applied Economics (MAGCEA) at the University of Chile, is going to investigate “Access to financing, gender gap and mental health: Evidence from entrepreneurs in Chile.” The professor in charge of it will be the researcher of the MIPP Millennium Institute Patricio Valenzuela.

Concerning her application and why she chose to investigate that problem, she said the following:

“I was interested in studying the gender gap in access to financing for entrepreneurs in Chile and analyzing whether this gap reproduces inequalities in the mental health of entrepreneurs during the pandemic. I believe that understanding the intersection between the different economic, social, and mental health effects between men and women caused by the pandemic would allow us to respond to an essential problem that greatly afflicts Chilean society.”

Isadora Gallardo: The student of the Master’s Degree in Applied Economics (MAGCEA) at the University of Chile, like Ivette Coronado, decided to investigate “Access to financing, gender gap, and mental health: Evidence from entrepreneurs in Chile.” The professor in charge of it will be the researcher of the MIPP Millennium Institute Patricio Valenzuela.

Magdalena Cruzat: The undergraduate student of Industrial Engineering at the University of Chile is going to research “Justice and Empowerment: Leveraging Online Technological Platforms to Improve Judicial Access, Reduce Domestic Violence and Increase Inclusion in the Labor Market”, however, she will be exploring a different approach to this topic. The professor in charge of it will also be the MIPP Millennium Institute researcher Damian Clarke.
