The Institute for Research in Market Imperfections and Public Policies (MIPP) is an academic center that develops and disseminates knowledge in economics and related fields. Our goal is to develop cutting-edge approaches to address some of the most challenging and important issues in market design and regulation, finance, data and public policy, and make them available to all of society.
Among the Institute’s objectives is the training of future generations of researchers in economics and public policies, for which it develops different activities and initiatives aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in the area. On the other hand, the Institute is promoting a gender agenda with training, research and extension components.
In this context, the “Gender, Economy and Public Policy Research Fund” aims to promote the development of research skills and competencies in undergraduate and graduate students, and highlight the importance of gender issues in the study of disciplines. of economics and public policies.
The Fund is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students studying programs in the areas of economics and public policies. Those who are selected must develop research on economics, public policies and gender issues, during the second half of 2023, under the supervision of one of the Institute’s researchers.
The Fund has two modalities:
I. Requirements:
II. Modalities:
Modality 1: Topics proposed by the researchers of the MIPP Institute. The themes proposed by the Institute’s researchers for the year 2023 are the following:
Topic #1: Justice and Empowerment: Leveraging Online Technology Platforms to Improve Judicial Access, Reduce Domestic Violence, and Increase Inclusion in the Labor Market.
Project Description: In this project, we propose to evaluate a randomized experiment in Chile that increased access to an advanced online platform in Family Courts, allowing court administrators to improve efficiency and reduce case processing times in their cuts. This experiment was carried out in the Family Courts, which handle cases related to domestic violence (DV) among other issues. We propose to combine this randomized controlled trial with detailed information on hospitalizations, criminal DV complaints, and salaries of women and men formally working in Chile. In this way, we will be able to examine whether improvements in judicial efficiency through the use of online platforms result in (a) a reduction in domestic violence rates, (b) an increase in criminal complaints related to DV, and (c) changes in the labor participation of women and men (possible victims and aggressors in cases of DV). This proposal combines a robust research design with high-quality administrative data and focuses on a vulnerable population that has historically had difficulty accessing quick solutions from the legal system when they need it most.
Topic No. 2: Access to financing, gender gap and mental health: Evidence from entrepreneurs in Chile.
Project Description: The present study seeks to explore whether there is a gender gap in access to financing for entrepreneurs in Chile and whether this gap causes inequalities in the effect that the pandemic had on the mental health of entrepreneurs. The study will use quasi-experimental methods estimated with data collected by a survey applied to more than 2,000 entrepreneurial clients of the SERCOTEC Business Centers throughout Chile.
Modality 2: Topics proposed by the students.
Those who wish to apply in this modality must indicate it in the application. including the title and a brief description of the proposed topic. If a topic proposed by a student is accepted, the MIPP will assign a teacher/tutor.
III. Duration, methodology and evaluation:
The work must be carried out between August and December 2023, within the framework of the spring 2023 semester of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile.
Each responsible researcher will define a work plan with the students, where agreed.
the schedule of progress and deliveries, frequency of coordination and monitoring meetings, etc.
The approval of the research (and the associated elective credits, if applicable) will be carried out by the responsible researcher, and will be subject to the delivery of a final report containing the most relevant aspects of the research, as well as the main results and conclusions.
