The initiative developed by the Central Bank of Chile (BCCh) and the MIPP Millennium Institute of the University of Chile, allowed teachers and students of Pedagogy in the country to be trained in contents associated with micro and macroeconomics; the functioning of the financial market; personal finances; money management; and the role and functions of the Central Bank.
On Thursday, January 12 at 6:00 p.m., the graduation ceremony for 386 new teachers and pedagogy students trained within the framework of the fifth version of the online course “The city of opportunities” was held at the Central Bank, an instance certified by the Center for Improvement, Experimentation and Pedagogical Research (CPEIP), and which was designed and taught jointly between the Central Bank and the Institute for Research on Market Imperfections and Public Policies (MIPP).
In this new edition, of the 386 newly graduated teachers, close to 52% are from the regions, which implies a significant arrival at educational establishments in the provinces of Chile. Regarding the establishments of the graduated teachers, the majority state that they belong to subsidized private schools (134), 74 to municipal education and 58 to private schools.
On the other hand, the course reached high levels of satisfaction among graduated teachers: 96% said that the contents were useful for their work as teachers, while 98% declared that they were very satisfied with the course. The graduates also showed significant learning achievements.
According to the results of the diagnostic test, at the beginning the teachers averaged a grade of 3.6 but at the end of the course modules a final test revealed that the teachers averaged a grade of 6.1, in a clear sign of how this training improved their knowledge of financial education and how to bring it to the classroom.
Finally, in the ceremony headed by the President of the Central Bank, Rosanna Costa, the diplomas were delivered to the graduates and five teachers who obtained a special prize for their final works, who stood out for their way of delivering the contents, the methodology used and didactic of their presentations.
The outstanding teachers of the fifth version of the Financial Education course “The City of Opportunities” were Sofía Rodríguez, Cindy Herrera, Carlos Tapia, Carolina Gonzáles and Gustavo Medina.
“The City of Opportunities has been and will be a great help for teachers and, consequently, for their students in the classroom,” says Andrea Canales, a researcher at the MIPP Millennium Institute and in charge of the management and contents of the course. “The economy is everywhere, but by not knowing it, it is difficult for us to understand it and apply it to everyday things. The idea behind the course is precisely to bring it closer to people, ”she adds.
