MIPP researcher becomes a member of the “Gender Advisory Council” of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation

24 September, 2020

The full and equal participation of women in all areas of society is a fundamental human right. Nevertheless, women and girls around the world are significantly under-represented: from politics and entertainment to workplace.

According to UN Women estimates, only 30% of the world’s researchers, and 35% of students in science, technology, engineering and / or mathematics (STEM) are women. In Chile, women represent 51.3% of undergraduate enrollments, but female participation in the fields of science is reduced to only 22%.

It is due to this reality that the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation deemed it necessary to seek the advice of experts by creating the Gender Advisory Council for the National System of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, whose principal objective is to promote a gender perspective and the equitable participation of women and men in all areas of science, technology and innovation. One of the expert members of the Council is our researcher, Ana María Montoya, who holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Barcelona and is also the founder of the ProCompetencia Network.

The purpose of this Advisory Council will be to guide the Undersecretary of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation in the design, implementation, and monitoring of gender policy that will facilitate building a national knowledge generation system without gender disparity, particularly in the education sector. In addition, the Council will be proposing rules and guidelines that allow for the implementation and maintenance of gender equality in the country’s research, development, and innovation systems, with special emphasis on region-specific characteristics and requirements.

We congratulate the MIPP researcher for being a member of this important Council!
