The online course on financial and economic education is taught jointly by the MIPP Millennium Institute of the Millennium Scientific Initiative, hosted by the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM), University of Chile, and the Central Bank of Chile. The course is specifically aimed at secondary school teachers who want to educate themselves on financial education and convey the acquired knowledge to their students.
This initiative arises from the need to equip the younger generation with knowledge on financial education and the necessary tools for making responsible decisions in this area. The results of the latest PISA test show that the degree of financial literacy in Chile is below the OECD country average, and below that of countries such as Russia, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia that have a per capita income similar to that of Chile.
During the 3 months of its duration, the online course seeks to provide educators with the necessary tools and knowledge on the topics of microeconomics, macroeconomics, money and the financial system, the role and functions of the Central Bank, and personal finances. The course is based on the curriculum guidelines established by the Ministry of Education, specifically the Economics and Society Unit within the subject of History and Social Sciences for Secondary Education, and the financial module of the PISA test.
The “Online Course on Financial and Economic Education” initiative already has a record of two successfully completed previous versions; nearly 600 teachers have graduated from its program, attaining thus the opportunity to expand their financial education tools, as well as those of their students.
