The MIPP Millennium Institute marks its 5th year of contributing in the economic and public policy discussions in the country. In this context, the latest volume of the MIPP Gazette is keeping its focus on bringing our readers insight on some of the issues that matter most to us, such as inequality, conflict, and market design, among others.
The latest issue of the MIPP Gazette c is already available online, and its feature coverage includes two articles related to the Mapuche Data Project.
Another highlight of this number is the article “How to design a bad auction: Lessons from the past”, written by Rahmi İlkılıç, MIPP researcher and academic at the Department of Industrial Engineering, U. de Chile. The article presents the reader with a historical encounter of public tenders in Chile and the world, with the end goal of learning from previous mistakes and implementing such lessons to the future design of government procurements.
Likewise, in the spotlight section (Destacados) of the Gazette we present a new point of view on the relationship between inequality and crime, through the article “Does inequality have an effect on crime?” a research that applies meta- analysis and reveals, among other results, that the true effect of inequality on crime is not statistically different from zero.
The conflict in Araucanía: New data on a long-standing dispute
The Mapuche Data Project (MDP) was conceptualized with the aim to identify, digitize, compile, process, and harmonize quantitative information related to the Mapuche people. Part of the scope of the MDP is brought to the Gazette readers through two articles, the first of which, titled “The Mapuche – Chilean State conflict: A quantitative description through MACEDA” is written by Alejandro Corvalán, Vice Director of the MIPP Millennium Institute and academic at the FCFM. This column presents harmonized data on the occurrence and intensity of events such as attacks, land occupations, protests and episodes of state coercion that occurred in Chile during the period 1990 – present.
Through this article and the Mapuche Data Project (MDP) in general, which is the special feature of the current edition of the Gazette, we would like to provide a solid foundation for future research in understanding the different aspects of the conflict, and the consequent prescriptions of public policies.
