The President of the Central Bank of Chile, Mario Marcel, and the Director of External Affairs at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM), University of Chile, Luis Vargas, announced the second version of “The City of Opportunities” – an online course on economic and financial education.
The course, designed for secondary education teachers as well as students of pedagogy in the subjects of History and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Spanish Language and Communications, in its first year was completed by 296 educators, who received the respective accreditation.
The President of the Central Bank, Mario Marcel, emphasized in his address that “Financial and economic education is a key tool for citizens to make informed decisions that will allow them to safeguard their well-being and quality of life, as well as to promote the stability of the financial system”. He added that “people are important for the economy: their consumption represents 64% of the domestic demand (62% of GDP); household savings account for 35% of gross national savings (7% of GDP); and households absorb 45% of bank loans (based on 2017 numbers) “.
This initiative reflects the curriculum material incorporated by the Ministry of Education in the subjects of History, Geography and Social Sciences. Its purpose is to teach educators content related to micro and macroeconomics, the banking system, personal finance, money and the role and functions of the Central Bank of Chile, in a simple and compelling way. The course also provides teachers with the proper tools for conveying these concepts to their students within a classroom setting.
The course will commence on April 30th, and its second edition incorporates improvements based on the feedback provided by the previous year’s graduating class. The enhanced version includes adjustments made to the evaluation sections of each course module, content expansion, and is also expected to strengthen the role of the instructors, who will guide the new students throughout the course.
“The City of Opportunities” is an initiative that originated as part of two existing programs –Central en tu Vida (Central Bank of Chile) and Proyección al Medio Externo (the Outreach program of the MIPP Millennium Institute), with the objective to promote interest and comprehension of economic and financial issues.
