In order to commemorate the International Women’s Day, Millennium Institute for Market Imperfections and Public Policies (MIPP), along with the Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas of Universidad de Chile (FCFM), Superintencia de Bancos e Instituciones Financieras (SBIF), and Federación Chilena de Cooperativas de Ahorro y Crédito (FECRECOOP), will hold the first program of financial education oriented to women from cooperatives.
Cooperatives are associations whose objective is to improve the life conditions of their members. They cover different economic areas, such as loan and savings, agriculture, fishing, transportation, mortgage, among others.
According to information provided by FECRECOOP, the cooperatives have more than a thousand million members from about eight thousand companies around the world. The economic results are representative: sales from the 300 biggest cooperatives in the world sum 1.1 trillion dollars.
In Chile, the cooperatives are part of a long tradition of around 150 years. Currently, the law defines cooperatives as associations founded by the principles of mutual help and cooperation. One of the main characteristics of this type of organizations is that the surplus is distributed among their members, who share rights and obligations.
Since the creation of the first cooperative, this sector has continued to expanded to all the regions in the country. According to FECRECOOP, more than a million people are associated to a cooperative, from which a 51.9% are women.
In this context, MIPP, SBIF, and FECRECOOP will hold the program ‘Financial Education for Women of Cooperatives’, activity in which the attendees will learn concepts about financial inclusion, savings, and indebtedness, among others.
The activity will be placed in the Auditorium Enrique d’Etigny, Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas of Universidad de Chile, Beauchef 851, Santiago, on March 10th 2016, 9:30 AM.
